Instrumental Music Classes

Concert Band is open to 9th grade band students incoming from middle school.  This class is the foundational building block that feeds the other two bands at WCHS. Students in concert band learn to fine tune their musicianship and instrumental technique by learning through performance.  The concert band performs three concerts in the academic year and is showcased in the spring during the Freshman concert.

Symphonic Band builds on the skills acquired from Concert band.  The class is open to 10-12th grade students.  This band performs four concerts in the academic year, including a performance at the MCPS Band Festival.  Students learn advanced musical skills through performance of grade 4 and 5 music.  Students in this ensemble are also eligible to travel with the instrumental music department on their yearly trip.

Wind Symphony is the premier wind ensemble at WCHS.  This class is open to students by audition only.  Students in this class perform four concerts a year including a performance at the MCPS Band Festival.  Students in this ensemble learn through performing some of the most challenging and advanced band repertoire.  Students in this ensemble are eligible to travel with the instrumental music department on their yearly trip.

Jazz Ensemble is open to students by audition only.  The jazz ensemble performs four concerts during the academic year, including a performance at the MCPS Big Band Jazz Festival.  Other performances include the Jazz Coffee Houses that give students the opportunity to perform in a real jazz club setting.  Students in jazz ensemble learn to perform in a variety of different jazz styles including swing, latin, ballad, rock, and funk.  Students in this ensemble are eligible to travel with the instrumental music department on their yearly trip.  

Pep Band is required of all band instrumentalists enrolled in WCHS instrumental music classes.  The pep band performs at all home football games in the fall.

AP Music Theory is a class open to 10-12th grade students with an interest in learning the inner workings of music and how it functions.  Students in AP music theory learn by training their ears as well as their minds in order to become overall better musicians.  The study of tonal harmony, rhythmic dictation, transposition, and score study will empower students with the skills necessary to compose music, arrange music, and lead rehearsals of their own.

Concert Orchestra is open to 9th-10th grade string students.  This class is the foundational building block that feeds the other two orchestras at WCHS.  Students in concert orchestra learn to fine tune their musicianship and string playing technique by learning through performance.  The concert orchestra performs three concerts in the academic year and is showcased in the spring during the Freshman concert.
